Centre Wellington Major Peewee AA did it again! What a ride!!
Following a most successful season that ended in a 3:0 win vs the Whitby Wildcats the Major Peewees AA advanced to the OHF championships under the leadership of Ryan Black and Derek Bolger.
This exceptional team has won the OMHA A championship 3 years in a row and the OHF in 2009. Last year was their 1st year playing AA and they gave TNT a run for their money losing in double ot and becoming finalists.
Nickel City-Sudbury hosted this year's OHF and the following teams came to compete: North Bay Trappers, London Knights, Nickel City Rebels, Mississauga Braves and of course CW. A round- robin 8:0 win vs North Bay was followed by a 1:6 loss to the "much-talked-about" Mississauga Braves. Another loss vs London Knights 1:3 and a 5:2 win vs Nickel City secured us a spot in the semi-finals vs London. Would CW be able to succeed?
Emotions were running high and a fast-paced 2:1 victory catapulted our little team into the finals vs the mighty Mississauga Braves. The Braves are a select team from the GTA who seemed to anticipate little serious competition during this tournament. Could the underdogs from the country beat the city-slickers from Mississauga?
A quick goal from the Braves was answered shortly after by Stovel taking us to a 1:1. Looking strong going into the 2nd period Zack Cameron took us to 2:1 which lasted until the end of the 2nd period when the Braves tied it up ending the game at a 2:2 tie.
The first 10 min overtime could not determine a winner. The 2nd 15 min overtime still could not determine a winner as both teams fought equally hard. Goalie Mark Henderson did an UNBELIEVABLE job and virtually stood on his head!
Over 70 min of game time had passed and the CW players were getting tired but were not slowing down! The tension in the arena was palpable and all spectators were on their feet. How much longer would this go on? Dictating the pace, CW pressured the Braves and there was no end in sight. In the 12th minute of OT a double-pass in front of our net by the Braves ended the game! The Braves scored the winning goal with 3:01 min left in the game.
CW did not win this game but should be incredibly proud for coming this far and fighting till the end without giving up! This is the stuff real winners are made of!
Congratulations to all the players and coaches! You have made Centre Wellington Minor Hockey Families & Fans PROUD!
